News from the Congregation March 4, 2018
A Message from the Wardens
Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen. (Collect for the third Sunday in Lent)
Dear Members and Friends of the Congregation of Saint Saviour,
Policy on listing names in the service leaflet to change
Prayer is a way of showing love and care. When we petition God, we lift up to God our concerns and the people who are dear to us. How we offer prayer within the community and within the liturgy is important. On Sunday in particular we list in the service leaflet the names of members of the community for whom our prayers are asked.
About a year ago a policy was instituted of dropping last names from the intercession list. This policy was not universally embraced by the community. With input from the vestry, the Dean and Chapter have determined that last names will again be included. They have also agreed upon a broader policy covering how names are added to the list, how long they stay, and how they may be removed.
Beginning Sunday, March 11, the following policy will be in place:
Full names are listed unless the person requesting prayer asks that the surname not be included.
Prayers are usually for acute conditions or situations. Prayers of Thanksgiving are also welcome and appropriate. Under most circumstance names are listed in the bulletin for no longer than three weeks.
To ask that the name of a loved one be placed on the Sunday intercession list, contact the Pastoral Care office at cbyun@stjohndivine.org or 212-316-7483.
Any name will be removed immediately upon the request of the person named or their immediate family.
Stewardship THANK YOU brunch well-attended and delicious
Special thanks to Mark Dilcom and Kevin De l’aigle, our stewardship chair, for a lovely event this past Sunday. A good crowd of people from both the 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. services enjoyed excellent coffee, bagels, toppings, juices and mimosas to celebrate a successful stewardship campaign. Several people pledged at the event which brought our pledges to 20% above last year’s. Of course it’s never ever too late to pledge – we welcome new pledges all year long. We appreciate all the pledges and gifts that allow our Congregation to support the Cathedral, support worthy causes, and to offer interesting programs.
Second Sunday, March 11
Don’t forget that March 11 is the second Sunday of the month and we will enjoy our traditional Second Sunday hospitality lunch in Cathedral House after the 11:00 A.M. service.
Tom Hurwitz safely back from Cambodia
We are especially pleased that Tom Hurwitz, one of our stalwart vergers, is back among us, still healing from his accident while filming in Cambodia, but able to attend services again. Welcome back Tom!
March for our Lives, March 24
Many members of our community are very active in social justice work. They go on marches, help sign up voters, get on buses to Washington to lobby. Possibly with the exception of the Pride March where the Diocese of New York has a float, our active members do their justice work through other organizations. On March 24 there will be a “March for our Lives” in Washington led by high school students with sister marches in other cities including New York. If you are interested in participating in the march in New York to support the students in their fight for a saner policy on guns, please email the wardens (wardens@saintsaviour.org). If there is enough interest expressed, we will work out a way for members to go as a group from Saint Saviour and the Cathedral community.
Cathedral Community Cares (CCC) March Collection
For March you are asked to bring in coffee, tea, and sugar for the CCC pantry. Please continue to leave your donations on the table next to the coffee set-up and volunteers will bring the items to CCC. Thank you for your continued support of this ministry.
