A Message from the Wardens

Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world: Evermore give us this bread, that he may live in us and we in him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen. (Collect for the fourth Sunday in Lent)

Dear Members and Friends of the Congregation of Saint Saviour,

Your Senior Warden hereby confesses that Lent is her favorite time of the church year.  There is so much available to enrich our spiritual lives: services, classes, a retreat.  Lent is now more than half over:  Just two more of Canon Malloy’s stimulating and informative Adult Formation Classes remain, the retreat has come and gone, the list of Wednesday night evening services with our sister parishes grows shorter.  Yet there are still two weeks before we enter the intensity of Holy Week.

Made in God’s Image: Female Imagery of God in Christian Worship, sponsored by the Congregation of Saint Saviour

On Thursday evening, March 15, come enjoy an intimate roundtable presentation and discussion with Dr. Elizabeth Ursic, author of the book Women, Ritual, and Power: Placing Female Imagery of God in Christian Worship (SUNY Press, 2014). Dr. Ursic will share insights and themes from her research with Christian communities that highlight female imagery of God in their worship, and comment on the importance of the statue Christa permanently installed here at the Cathedral.  She will also discuss the function of creativity and imagination in spiritual development.  A light snack will be available from 6:30.m. and the presentation will begin at 7:00.

Kent Curtis led the Lenten Retreat this year

Thanks to the organizing skills of Vestry Member Meryl Marcus and the wisdom and dedication of Deacon Curtis, we enjoyed a weekend retreat contemplating the stations of the cross, sharing and praying.  Kent led us in the daily offices (morning prayer, noonday prayer, evening prayer and compline).  The Reverend Carol Johannson came in on Sunday morning to celebrate the Eucharist.  We all left ready to walk the remaining days of Lent reminded of our need to recognize Christ in each other and in the stranger.

Lenten Adult Formation classes, St Saviour Chapel 12:45- 1:45
This highly informative and entertaining series continues on Sundays through March 18.  Open to all, and especially appropriate for those who will be baptized or confirmed at the Easter Vigil this year, this 5-session class covers the basics of the Christian faith as received through the Anglican tradition.  A light lunch is available. Actually—it’s pizza!

Manhattan North Inter-Parish Council Lenten Services
Wednesday evenings in Lent, all are invited to join our neighboring parishes for a service at 7:00 p.m. followed by dinner.  Here are the dates, locations and addresses:

March 14, 2018   Church of the Crucifixion (459 West 149th St)
March 21, 2018   All Souls’ Church  (88 St. Nicholas Avenue)

March for our Lives, March 24
On March 24 there will be a “March for our Lives” in Washington led by high school students with sister marches in other cities including New York.  If you are interested in participating in the march in New York to support the students in their fight for a saner policy on guns, please email the wardens (wardens@saintsaviour.org).  If there is enough interest expressed, we will work out a way for members to go as a group from Saint Saviour and the Cathedral community. We are also expecting the Diocesan Social Justice Committee to announce a gathering place for Episcopalians to march together, once the route is known.

Cathedral Community Cares (CCC) March Collection
For March you are asked to bring in coffee, tea, and sugar for the CCC pantry.  Please continue to leave your donations on the table next to the coffee set-up and volunteers will bring the items to CCC.  Thank you for your continued support of this ministry.

Bible Study led by Dr. Jon Aceto, continues through Lent
Bible study now meets in St. Martin’s Chapel at 10:10 on Sundays.  All are welcome to come and share their thinking on the lectionary of the day.

For whom then should we pray?
To ask that the name of a loved one be placed on the Sunday intercession list and printed in the service leaflet, contact the Pastoral Care office at cbyun@stjohndivine.org or 212-316-7483. Names remain on the list for no longer than three weeks. Thanksgivings may also be offered.

May you continue to have a Holy Lent
