A Message from the Wardens

“Set us free, O God, from the bondage of our sins, and give us the liberty of that abundant life which you have made known to us in your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.” (Collect for the fifth Sunday after the Epiphany)

Dear Members and Friends of the Congregation of Saint Saviour,

Congregation Annual Meeting

We held our annual meeting on Sunday and it was standing room only.  In addition to the election, we had reports on children and adult formation, stewardship, pastoral care, and the Little Pilgrims children’s program.  We heard about some plans for 2018 and remembered members of the community who passed away since our last meeting.  The events committee outdid themselves with excellent and hearty food.   If you were unable to attend, you may see the annual report by clicking here.

Members of the vestry are:

Wardens:  Marsha Ra (’19), Tim Dwyer (’20)

Vestry, class of 2019:  Mary-Elizabeth Mitchell, Michael Nixon, Lorraine Simmons, Lewis Salas

Vestry, class of 2020:  Gale Kenny, Kevin de L’Aigle, JoAnn Bell, Paula Gifford McKenzie

Vestry class of 2021:  Bob Deming, Meryl Marcus, Fred Wherry, Barbara Whiteman-Hull

IPC Representatives:  Hal Weiner, Jeanne Wertheimer

Several people made pledges at the meeting, bringing our pledge total for this year to $95,620, a healthy increase over last year.

Prayers for Long-Serving Verger Tom Hurwitz

Tom’s wife Margaret Klenck has informed us that Tom, a celebrated documentary cinematographer, suffered a bad fall while filming at Angkor Wat and has broken 8 ribs and his clavicle. He will be spending several weeks in a hotel in Cambodia until it is safe for him to travel.  His son Nicholas has flown to be with him.  Let us all pray that Tom recovers quickly, his pain is alleviated and that we see him once again in his verger’s vestments leading the procession.

Second Sunday Mardi Gras, February 11

Next Sunday is our Second Sunday fellowship after the 11:00 a.m. service.  As Lent is only a few days away, the theme will be Mardi Gras, with jambalaya and other foods appropriate to the season.  We are looking forward to seeing you there.

Cathedral Community Cares February Collection

Please bring new or gently used business attire clothing and jeans for men and women to church during the month of February.   Leave the donation on the table next to the coffee set-up and volunteers will bring the items to CCC.

Lent 2018

The Lenten program is shaping up nicely for our community.  Canon Patrick Malloy is offering classes on Baptism Sundays in Lent after the 11:00 a.m. service beginning February 18. The classes will take place in Cathedral House and include a light lunch.  Though designed for those planning to be baptized or confirmed, the classes will be open to everyone. This will be an excellent opportunity to reflect on our own Baptisms in preparation for Holy Week.

The Congregation is offering a Lenten Retreat led by Deacon Kent Curtis at Mariandale Retreat Center, March 9-11.  Those who attended the retreat Deacon Curtis led last Lent know that they are in for a moving experience, a chance to share, ponder and pray. This year we will use a book entitled Meditations on the Way of the Cross as our guide.  This book was co-authored by Mother Teresa of Calcutta and Brother Roger, founder of an ecumenical Christian monastic order in Taizé, Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy, France.  Copies will be made available to those attending .  Additionally, we will use some of the most poignant and beautiful music written by the Taizé Community as a way to frame our time of shared reflection and discussion.  Reservations are due by February 16. Work on the Cathedral Nave

The Department of Buildings called for an immediate inspection of the ceiling of the Cathedral Nave. The work on the center aisle began in late January.

  • The Nave from the choir stalls to the Crossing is inaccessible to all staff and visitors. It is roped off with caution tape.

  • Access will be open in the North and South Aisles, Crossing, Great Choir, Ambulatory, and Chapels.

  • The 5 door will remain open to the public.

  • Crews will be actively working from 7 am – 11 pm. This involves workers on the lift you’ve recently seen in the Cathedral inspecting the ceiling and cleaning any old mortar.

Because of the importance of this inspection, we are all being asked to work around the limited access and noise. While regularly scheduled services, tours, and other events will continue, the inspection work and the noise associated with it will not stop except due to any unforeseen circumstances. Once the center aisle work has been completed, the ceilings in each Bay will be inspected.  After that inspection is complete, we will know the extent of any necessary repairs. Additional updates will follow as we learn more.

All the best,

Tim Dwyer and Marsha Ra
