News from the Congregation February 12, 2018
A Message from the Wardens
Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing you have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” (Collect for Ash Wednesday)
Dear Members and Friends of the Congregation of Saint Saviour,
What a joyful Mardi Gras fellowship yesterday with which we ended the season of Epiphany! The ingredients were ordered, the dinner planned, strings of colored beads taken from their packages when we got word that there would be no stove available. Our creative and hard-working events committee didn’t miss a beat. Borrowing skillets and griddles and figuring out how to balance the electricity, they produced a feast worthy of a great congregation: two kinds of jambalaya (regular and vegan), fresh, hot French toast, fruit salad, bacon, sausage, desserts and drinks. Friends and strangers ate their fill, laughed and talked until the food was gone. Special thanks to our resourceful committee: Lisa Chin, Phyllis Murray, Susan and Will Baldwin, Sonia and Akisa Omulepu, Angelo Santos and Hal Weiner.
Absalom Jones Observance
Despite not having the Nave available (ceiling inspections continue...), the Diocese celebrated the life and ministry of Absalom Jones on Saturday the 10th. Our Congregation was well-represented among the liturgical volunteers and attendants.
Ash Wednesday, February 14
This year Imposition of ashes will take place at 7:15 AM, 8:30 AM, 12:15 PM, and 7 PM services. In addition, clergy will impose ashes outside on Amsterdam Avenue throughout the day.
Update on programs for the community during Lent
Canon Patrick Malloy is offering classes on Baptism Sundays in Lent after the 11:00 a.m. service beginning February 18. The classes will take place in Cathedral House and include a light lunch. Though designed for those planning to be baptized or confirmed at the Easter Vigil, the classes will be open to everyone. This will be an excellent opportunity to reflect on our own Baptisms in preparation for Holy Week.
Retreat on The Way of the Cross, March 9 - 11
The Congregation is offering a Lenten Retreat led by Deacon Kent Curtis at Mariandale Retreat Center, March 9-11. Those who attended the retreat Deacon Curtis led last Lent know that they are in for a moving experience, a chance to share, ponder and pray. This year we will use a book entitled Meditations on the Way of the Cross as our guide. This book was co-authored by Mother Teresa of Calcutta and Brother Roger, founder of an ecumenical Christian monastic order in Taizé, Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy, France. Copies will be made available. Additionally, we will use some of the most poignant and beautiful music written by the Taizé Community as a way to frame our time of shared reflection and discussion. Reservations are due by February 16. For more information: http://www.saintsaviour.org/events/2018/1/11/congregation-of-st-saviour-lenten-retreat

Please continue to leave donations on the table next to the coffee set-up and volunteers will bring the items to CCC.
May you have a Holy Lent,
