From Canon Lee

The Cathedral Congregation joins the Majors family and everyone in our neighborhood, especially the Barnard and Columbia community, in sharing our profound grief at the senseless murder of Tessa Majors, a first-year student at Barnard College, who was killed just a few blocks away from the Cathedral in Morningside Park on Wednesday evening.

All are invited to a Community Vigil, this Sunday, December 15 at 4:30 PM, at the Pond in Morningside Park, as a way to give voice to our grief.

The Rev. Canon Steven Lee
Canon Pastor and Vicar

CHRISTMAS
AT THE CATHEDRAL

4:00 PM Christmas Eve Lessons and Carols

The very large puppets that for many years have been part of Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve suffered smoke damage in the Palm Sunday fire. New puppets are being constructed but will not be ready for this year. The service, a favorite of families with small children, will otherwise be the same as usual. We look forward to Christmas 2020 and the arrival of our new Christmas puppets.

From Marsha and Tim

Last weekend was incredible—really—incredible: We had 85 exhibitors load in on Thursday. The fair opened on Friday at noon. Dozens of you volunteered to make and sell food during the three days. It was a wonderful assembly line with food being prepared in Cathedral House as well as the soup kitchen. Our first experience accepting credit cards at the café (St. Saviour enters the mid-20th century?)

Thanking everyone involved is dangerous since we are bound to leave someone out! But here goes: The jury included Congregation members Barbara Trelstad, Susan Stair and Sharne Jackson. Web design was handled by Jim Wroten who belongs to Grace Church. Graphics by Hope Chang, Canon Lee’s assistant. The food was prepared by a very large team headed by Lisa Chin; the café was run by Emily Baldwin. Susan Stair, Marsha Ra, JoAnn Bell and Barbara Trelstad were available throughout the fair to field questions and respond quickly to any problems encountered by exhibitors. We increased advertising which seemed to result in higher attendance. We don’t have a bottom line number yet (there are still some bills outstanding), but the congregation grossed over $50,000, the Cathedral Chorister parents $1,500 and Visitor Services collected the entry fees for more than 2,100 visitors to the Fair.

As important as the bottom line, there were other successes, including the joy of working with other Cathedral Departments. So many exhibitors told us this: They were thrilled to be in the Cathedral space. They could feel the presence of a loving Christian community. They knew we wanted the best for them and that we supported them as best we could. They loved the services on Sunday—many attended others stayed in their booths and listened. The music blew them away. As we pat each other on the back, we begin to think of improvements for next year!

Advent Blessings,
Tim and Marsha
