Dean Malloy

Dear Friends,

Since we resumed our Sunday Eucharist after the pandemic, the Congregation has offered exemplary hospitality, primarily during the coffee hour. That takes the form of food and drink, but mostly and more importantly, it takes the form of conversations with visitors. I suspect such extraversion is hard work for many of us, and that makes what you do especially admirable.

On September 24, we will receive and vest the first cohort of the Community at the Crossing. As you know, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby, will preach. The Vestry has decided that the Congregation will not provide refreshments that day. I’m glad, because that will allow you to be fully present without having to worry about coffee urns and table cloths.  We will outsource the refreshment ministry.

That does not free us from the obligations of hospitality, of course, but it frees us up to be hospitable in a less specific but even more crucial way. We will have guests that day from literally all over the world and from an array of Christian traditions. We are used to the Cathedral. It’s our place. Not so for most visitors, and we will have the opportunity and the honor to greet, help, and make introductions that morning.

Many of you have visited Holy Cross Monastery and other groups of monastics who follow the sixth-century Rule of Saint Benedict. The Rule famously says, “All guests who present themselves are to be welcomed as Christ, for he himself will say, ‘I was a stranger and you welcomed me.’ Proper honor must be shown to all, especially to those who share our faith and to pilgrims.” That’s good advice for us every day, but especially on days when we have a large number of guests.

How shall we, the home team, do what Saint Benedict exhorts? Could we meet by Zoom on Tuesday, September 5 at 4:00 PM to brainstorm ideas and offer one another encouragement and support?

In the Rule, Benedict makes radical suggestions and directives about what to do when visitors come to the door. He tell the monastic to greet guests even by prostrating before them in recognition that they are a manifestation of Christ. A member of the community should be assigned to help them through the liturgy. The superior of the community should wash the hands of the guests, then the entire community should wash their feet. That is how sacred guests are.

On September 24, let’s encourage one another and help one another to treat all our visitors as if Jesus himself has come among us. In fact, as at every Eucharist, that is exactly what will happen.

I am honored to be part of your community.

The Very Reverend Patrick Malloy
Dean

Volunteers at the Cathedral

At Homecoming on September 10, we will be honoring and thanking the many volunteers who make our life at the Cathedral possible.   We come together day by day, week by week, to give thanks to God, and connect to God both as individuals and as a community.  This is something we do together—we are the Body of Christ, and, as the hand relies on the eye and the eye the hand, we rely on one another as we worship.  We raise one another up, we rejoice for one another as things go well and weep when things are difficult.  But above all, we try to make our lives God-centered.  As we gathered the names and ministries of the many generous souls who do so much to make this possible, we were amazed at how much they do and how many there are!   There are liturgical volunteers who read, usher, carry the cross and torches, assist at distributing Communion, set up before the service and clean up after the service and polish the silver.  To this group add the 40 singers who volunteer and augment the music raised by the professional musicians.  Then there is the hospitality group that sets up coffee and tea, brings ice in the summer, bakes or buys snacks for the coffee hour where we can relax, get to know one another and welcome strangers every Sunday.  There are those who lead Morning and Evening Prayer on ZOOM.  There are those who serve on committees, who manage our membership database, who keep our website and Instagram accounts up to date.   As a place of pilgrimage we have volunteers who greet the many visitors all week long and who offer tours of the Cathedral.  Then there are those who quietly engage and welcome the many visitors who appear each Sunday and join us for Coffee hour. You know who you are!

Young Adults of Saint Saviour Bible Study (Meets once a month)

All members of the Cathedral Community and Congregation in their 20s and 30s are invited to a Bible study hosted by the Young Adults of Saint Saviour. Last month we discussed the beginning of Jesus’ ministry and his call for us to change our hearts.
Immediately after the service, we gather in the nave during coffee hour and walk over to the Chapel of Saint James in the Cathedral.

No preparation or prior Bible study experience is necessary. All young adults are welcome!

NEWS FROM THE CONGREGATION

The Weekly Sunday Hospitality continues.

Research shows that the more you give the more you get. The more you help, the more invested you become in your church and the more it feeds you. Isn’t that amazing? Do you enjoy the coffee and the treats--the time together every week for conversation and welcoming of visitors? To keep this ministry going we need to expand the number of people involved. If you are on the list of helpers and providers of snacks, THANK YOU! If you haven’t volunteered yet— why not join the team? There is nothing exclusive about it. All are welcome to help out. If you can come once a month or every 6 -8 weeks to set up before the service and clean-up after the coffee hour, please contact Marsha Ra or Sue Sobolewski. Or talk to us on any Sunday. We will get you started on this ministry.
