News from the Congregation March 8, 2019
From Fr. Steven
First, a message from Donna Devlin, our Director of Christian Education:
Susan Stair is leaving us for a while. She has been a gracious and dedicated teacher for our very young Little Pilgrims. As an artist she has many interests and activities and needs some more time to pursue those right now. Susan will be back for visits as her schedule permits. In the meantime, I am thrilled to be able to spend more time with all the children entrusted to our care. To that end, both Sunday groups will meet together on March 17. Can you possibly guess what our topic of conversation might be that day?
We have some new and different activities planned to help our children develop and grow into strong, focused, healthy individuals with a good sense of who they are and where they’re going.
April marks the time that a lovely caring and experienced young woman will be with the younger children for an exciting new program within our St. John the Divine Christin Education/Formation program. We plan to have several new faces visit our two children’s groups to offer new insights and voices. Stay tuned for more news as things develop.
Always, please feel free to visit our classes and to be in contact with me with questions and concerns or suggestions. My e-mail address is: SarahAnnB@ aol.com. - Donna Devlin
I want to echo my thanks to Susan who has done a wonderful job teaching our younger Sunday School children for the past year. In fact, everyone who works with children at the Cathedral on Sundays, including Donna, Susan, our seminarian Peggy Lo, the youth in our confirmation class, and all of our parents, ought to be congratulated for our growing and thriving ministry to children and families.
When I first started working here about two-and-a-half years ago, we had a handful of children in our parish community. A couple Sundays ago, there were 10 children in our Next Step class alone. In addition, we have 8 youth taking a year-long class with us as preparation for their confirmation in June. By way of context, we only had 1 youth confirmed in the past two years combined.
Finally, in keeping with the theme of numbers, I'd like to echo Marsha and Tim's message below and invite all of you to the Thank You Brunch at 10am this Sunday, March 10 between the services. Our children's programs this Sunday will be canceled so that all parents and children can come too. We are offering this brunch to thank all of you who have made a financial pledge to support our congregation in 2019.
Our current 2019 pledge total is the highest in at least the past 10 years. Your generosity makes it possible for us to fund so many of our initiatives, especially the aforementioned growing and vibrant ministry to children, youth and families. So thank you!

DAY LIGHT SAVING TIME BEGINS THIS SUNDAY – TIME TO SPRING FORWARD!
If you forget to set your clocks forward on March 10 several things may happen: 1) You will show up for the stewardship brunch and discover you missed it; 2) You will come for the 11:00 a.m. service and walk in as the Communion is being distributed;. 3) You love Evensong and show up as the choir is exiting. Don’t let any of these things happen to you. Spring forward and be prepared to enjoy the longer days of light during Lent.
