News from the Congregation June 8, 2018
From the Vicar
PLEASE NOTE: DURING THE SUMMER, THE VICAR AND WARDENS' LETTER WILL BE PUBLISHED MONTHLY.
***
O God, in the course of this busy life, give us times of refreshment and peace; and grant that we may so use our leisure to rebuild our bodies and renew our minds, that our spirits may be opened to the goodness of your creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
I have some exciting news for you. This week, Dean Daniel and Sub Dean Malloy met with the candidate I have proposed to be the seminarian for the Congregation, and they approved her selection. I am pleased to announce that Peggy Lo will be our seminarian for the upcoming program year beginning in the fall of 2018.
Peggy is a rising Senior at Berkeley Divinity School at Yale and a Postulant from Grace Cathedral in the Diocese of California. Prior to coming to seminary she worked for the Public Interest Network as a campus organizer, central recruitment administrator and budget administrator, and for the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation as a translator and editor of Buddhist lectures. She graduated from Stanford University in 2001 with her A.B. in Psychology and a minor in Asian American Studies.
Peggy also has deep experience with Episcopal polity and in particular with cathedral life, as she serves as a Congregational Trustee of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, and she was on the search committee that chose the current dean, The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young. She will also be participating in General Convention this summer, which is the Episcopal Church's highest governing body that meets every three years. Last year, Peggy did her seminarian field work with the Episcopal churches in the Harlem area, and her supervisor was The Rev. Matthew Heyd of Heavenly Rest.
But even more impressive than Peggy's educational and professional accomplishments is her spiritual maturity, which will be a blessing to our Congregation and Cathedral. Peggy will work with our families ministry (and if you haven't been to the 9am service recently, you will be happy to know that the number of families with young children has grown dramatically in the past year and a half); adult formation; pastoral care; and preaching and participating in the liturgy.
She will officially start this fall, and I know you will do everything to make her feel welcome to our community.
Blessings,
Steven
From the Wardens
Summer is upon us. Many members of the community will go off on vacation. Their seats become filled with ever more visitors who are taking their vacations in New York City. The cathedral grows hot. Huge fans are brought out to make the atmosphere bearable. If you are going off for a few weeks, we hope that your vacation is perfect and that you return refreshed. If you are enjoying a “staycation” in the City we look forward to continuing to see you on Sunday mornings. The Congregation and the Cathedral program slow down a good bit. Therefore we will be sending these letters out less frequently. We are planning on once a month unless something comes up that must be shared. Second Sunday lunches—those monthly occasions for special hospitality—will continue, as will collections for CCC and Bible study.
And what will your vestry be up to? Preparing the fall program, that’s what!
Wishing you all a joyful, healthy summer,
Tim Dwyer

Second Sunday—Hospitality Sunday June 10, 12:30 p.m. Cathedral House—It’s a STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL!
Join us this coming Sunday for lunch at Cathedral House. It is the annual Strawberry festival. Come and enjoy strawberries with sugar or without sugar, with whipped cream or not. Enjoy good conversation and have an opportunity to welcome visitors, inquirers, new members.
Cathedral Community Cares Collections continue through June
Continuing our support of CCC, in June we are collecting clothes appropriate for job interviews. Please leave items next to the sign on the table near the coffee set-up before or after the 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. services. Thank you for your on-going support of this ministry.
Bible Study continues Sundays from 10:10 to 10:40 in the Chapel of St. Martin.
All are welcome to attend the weekly adult Bible study each Sunday and share thoughts about the Sunday readings. This group has been meeting regularly under the leadership of Dr. Jon Aceto for more than 10 years.
