BLACK LIVES MATTER
Cathedral Statement on the Murder of George Floyd, Come to a Black Lives Matter Vigil and Litany of Repentance Friday at 6:00 pm on Cathedral Steps
Black Lives Matter
The Cathedral Congregation stands in solidarity with the Black community, which is reeling from yet another murder at the hands of police brutality and white supremacy. We mourn with the family and friends of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery and the countless others who have lost their lives and their hope to this scourge. We have issued this statement, signed by the Dean and Chapter, as well as the Congregation Wardens, and written by the Racial Reconciliation and Reparations committee.
Our faith calls us to action, and so this Friday at 6PM we invite you to gather together on the steps of the Cathedral to say the names of those we have lost; to pray a litany of repentance; and to take a knee, raise a fist, or make whatever gesture of protest you are able to make.
Like Christ, we offer ourselves to this moment, and we give what we have. Our building stands empty in this pandemic, but it would also stand for nothing if it did not stand for the dignity and immeasurable value of every Black life. Our Cathedral cannot march. It cannot kneel. But it can stand as witness to this moment and proudly proclaim a message at the center of the Gospel of Jesus Christ: that Black Lives Matter.
