Canon Lee

I am excited to announce some good news for the Cathedral's Development department. First, upon recommendation of the Senior Leadership Team, Dean Malloy has appointed Bill Wagner to be the Chief Financial and Advancement Officer.

Since the beginning of the year, Bill and I have led the Development department on an interim basis, and I have been impressed by the vision and energy Bill brought to the task. Bill has significant experience in development from prior positions, and the Senior Leadership Team has recognized that Bill has the professional and personal skills, the knowledge of the Cathedral, and the love for our shared mission that make him the right person to run the department for the foreseeable future.

Second, I am excited to announce that Taylor Margaret Johnson has been hired as the Manager of Individual Giving. Her first day at the Cathedral was this past Wednesday, June 7.

Taylor was previously the Manager of Patron Relations at the Atlantic Theater Company here in New York City. Prior to this position, she was the Manager of Development and Communications at the Church of the Heavenly Rest, where she worked closely with the Rt. Rev. Matthew Heyd, the Bishop Coadjutor. At Heavenly Rest, Taylor managed an annual fundraising campaign of 1.3 million dollars and directed a Capital Campaign of 5.46 million dollars.

As the fiscal year comes to a close, the Cathedral's Development department has raised a record amount of 4 million dollars for the Cathedral. Included in this result are significant one-time bequests from generous benefactors.

With this new structure in place, we expect the Development department to continue their excellent results as they work to secure, with the help and participation of all of our supporters, the financial foundation of our beloved Cathedral.

The Rev. Canon Steven Lee
Vicar

Warden Bob Deming writes about community:

In the last few weeks, I have noticed the wording of the blessing part of Prayers of the People at the Sunday morning service:

For the blessing of this life, especially for the Cathedral community. For other blessings, which we speak aloud or type into the chat.

The acknowledgement of the Cathedral community captured my attention.

I am writing this as a member of the Cathedral community, but also as a member of the Congregation community. I know that Cathedral/Congregation distinction can be confusing. Let me try to explain, with a particular focus on the Congregation. Many of us from the Congregation worship regularly at the Cathedral. The Congregation consists of those who call the Cathedral their home church. We presently have approximately 140 contributing members in our Realm Database, who have raised about $60,000 since the beginning of the year.

This is how the Cathedral’s website describes the Congregation:

The Congregation of Saint Saviour, formed in 1992, is its own non-profit corporation that functions as the Episcopal congregation in the Cathedral, the Mother Church of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. We have elected lay wardens and vestry, and a vicar appointed by the Dean of the Cathedral. The Congregation includes people who live in the neighborhood or city, have recently moved here for study or work, commute from nearby towns and states or who live far away and simply want to have their spiritual roots in this place. We welcome them all!

In the last few years, the Congregation has made a concerted, collective effort to extend hospitality to the wider community. The coffee ministry after the Sunday morning service is a manifestation of that.

The Congregation also makes a concerted effort to take care of one another. The Cathedral is a huge place, and it is important that our caregiving come forth to humanize the experience for one and all.

I end with an attempt at a metaphor. You may have noticed that the Cathedral website has been refreshed and vitalized with new colors, including the glorious light display during this Pride month. The first image that pops up on the computer screen is a closeup of the beautiful upper rose stained-glass window high up above the bronze doors, as viewed from within the Cathedral. This is a transcendent image, one that hopefully will be there for generations to come. Where does the Congregation fit into this image of the rose stained-glass windows? I do not know the fine details of stain glass making, but I assume that the gorgeous windows are made up of many small pieces of glass that are held together by glue or grout. I picture the Congregation as glue or grout. We are hidden in the cracks in the background; nonetheless, we are vital, I contend, because we allow things to cohere, in the present but also extending forward far into the future.

Immediately after the service, we gather in the nave during coffee hour and walk over to the Chapel of Saint James in the Cathedral.

No preparation or prior Bible study experience is necessary. All young adults are welcome!

NEWS FROM THE CONGREGATION

The Weekly Sunday Hospitality continues.

Research shows that the more you give the more you get. The more you help, the more invested you become in your church and the more it feeds you. Isn’t that amazing? Do you enjoy the coffee and the treats--the time together every week for conversation and welcoming of visitors? To keep this ministry going we need to expand the number of people involved. If you are on the list of helpers and providers of snacks, THANK YOU! If you haven’t volunteered yet— why not join the team? There is nothing exclusive about it. All are welcome to help out. If you can come once a month or every 6 -8 weeks to set up before the service and clean-up after the coffee hour, please contact Marsha Ra or Sue Sobolewski. Or talk to us on any Sunday. We will get you started on this ministry.
