Canon Lee

I have been in Los Angeles this week at the 2nd annual Asian-American Leadership Retreat for clergy and laity of the Episcopal Church. It has been an inspiring week of sharing stories, making connections, and developing strategies for making our church a more welcoming place for all people.

But as much as I have loved this work, I have missed the Cathedral and our Congregation. I look forward to being back with you this Sunday.

The Rev. Canon Steven Lee
Canon Pastor and Vicar

This week's Bible Study is led by Senior Warden Marsha Ra.

Marsha and Tim

The past few weeks have been full of activity both happy and sad.  The Divine Fellowship led by Kevin De l’Aigle and Tim Farrell, surprised us on January 5 with a joyful Epiphany party, complete with kings’ crowns for everyone in attendance. We celebrated in Saint Saviour chapel which seems very appropriate.  The next Sunday we enjoyed our typical Second Sunday.  The hospitality committee under Lisa Chin’s leadership mounts these monthly get-togethers.  They had also put on an Epiphany party the day before for the Manhattan North Inter-Parish Council. They are a hard working group indeed.

We were sobered by the death of the Very Reverend James Parks Morton just three days before his 90th birthday.  His funeral on Saturday evening was an event of intense celebration of a life so well lived.  For the few of us who were around through his tenure, it was amazing to run into so many friends from those days, including, of course, Pamela Morton who had contributed so much to the growth of a worshipping community at the Cathedral, and his three surviving daughters who are now middle aged and came with Jim’s, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The Congregation provided a place for the family to rest and have a snack.  This hospitality was primarily used by the small children.

The passage of time often surprises.  In this case, the funeral seemed to slow down everything, at least for the senior warden, who was pulled back to a past that was rich and blessed. I saw several of our youngest members ushering which spoke to me of a healthy flow of old and new in our Cathedral.  Thank you to all who ushered, served as acolytes and vergers and helped in other ways.
