Would you have guessed that the world’s most famous wine-making country owes much of its renown to the Church? Some of the most celebrated wines today—including Champagne, Burgundy, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape—were developed and perfected as early as the 11th century by Christian monks and thanks to Papal funding.

Join us as we taste and learn about the fascinating intersection between wine-making and the Church that forever marked the French winescape. The class will be led by a certified sommelier and includes 6 glasses of wine, plus a small antipasti plate to snack on during the tasting. Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions in advance in the memo section, and we will be happy to accommodate.

This Sunday you get to sleep in an extra hour. It’s “fall back” as we give up day-light savings time. That extra rest will prepare you for the observance of the Feast of All Saints. (So put away that Halloween candy!) Bishop Andrew Dietsche is making a formal visitation to the Congregation of Saint Saviour that day. He will be the celebrant and the preacher at both the 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services. Babies will be baptized at both services and new choristers installed at the 11:00. We will sing All Saints hymns.

Most exciting of all is the formal promotion at the 11:00 a.m. service of our Vicar Steven Lee to Canon Pastor. This archaic sounding title is actually filled with significance. As a Canon Residentiary, Father Lee will take his place in the Cathedral Chapter. According to the by-laws of the Cathedral, “To the Dean and Chapter are entrusted corporately and collegially the administration and the spiritual and temporal interests of the Cathedral.” This is a wonderful recognition of the work that Father Lee has been doing with and among the Congregation. In his short time among us he has accomplished much, helping and prodding us to become true disciples.

After the 11:00 a.m. service, the Bishop will meet with the Vestry for discussion of our ministry here at the Cathedral.

Be aware in this stewardship season that the Congregation mounts a spectacular crafts fair in the nave and crossing of the Cathedral December 6 – 8 which will bring in extra funds to help us support the Cathedral, offer programs for children, do mission and outreach work, etc. It is also an event that supports the artisans who come to sell their hand-made work. There are many ways for everyone in the Congregation to help with the show. Most important of all is to promote it to your friends, like it on Facebook and Instagram—help get the word out. To find out more about the Crafts at the Cathedral, especially its quality, please check www.craftsatthecathedral.orgThe show started twenty four years ago as a small event in Synod Hall. It is now a Cathedral “Signature” event.

There is no doubt that our congregation is seeing a growth of new ministries and fellowship opportunities. Last weekend 14 members of the Congregation including your senior warden enjoyed a wonderful retreat at Holy Cross Monastery. It was a joy to spend time with the monks chanting the psalms, sharing the Eucharist, and relaxing into long periods of silence. Our seminarian Jennifer Allen led us in meditation through visual images in an exploration of Viseo divina. There were lovely meals and a chance to get to know one another better. The next retreat will take place March 27-29, 2020.

Last Sunday your junior warden attended the LGBTQ+ Fellowship organizing committee meeting. The group met and began their work of finding a clear purpose. They agreed that at least initially the group would be purposed around fellowship, a desire to raise the profile of the community at the Cathedral to ensure that others in NYC knew they had a friendly home here, and to find ways to help LGBTQ+ youth given that a high proportion of homeless youth identify as such. They are in the process of developing a mission/ministry statement, and should be voting on it at their next meeting, November 17 after the 11:00 a.m. service.

Blessings to all!
Marsha & Tim
