In Memoriam — Clyde Hicks (1952-2021)
From the the Sub-Dean
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
In the absence of Canon Lee, who is on his annual holiday, I am writing to share with you the sad news that our brother, Clyde Hicks, died on Thursday morning. Canon Lee visited Clyde in his last days at White Plains Hospital and anointed him. I hope you will be consoled to learn that Clyde knew that we in the Church were with him is his dying, just as we were in his living.
Most of you knew Clyde far better and far longer than I did, so I hesitate to say much. Even in a short time, though, I found comfort in his solid, unassuming presence, and encouragement in his perennial kindness to me. He was a good man, and I will miss him.
Clyde’s body has been cremated and his remains will rest in Virginia, where his parents are buried. I have heard some talk of a small memorial gathering here in New York. I’m sure Canon Lee and your wardens will let you know if that comes to pass.
The Prayer Book gives us these words.
O God of grace and glory,
we remember before you this day our brother Clyde.
We thank you for giving him to us,
his family and friends,
to know and to love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage.
In your boundless compassion,
console us who mourn.
Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life,
so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth,
until, by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. (493)
Your brother,
(The Reverend) Canon Patrick Malloy, PhD
