This online event of reflection and quiet time will focus on the words and ideas of Howard Washington Thurman (November 18, 1899 – April 10, 1981). Dr. Thurman was an African-American author, philosopher, theologian, educator, and civil rights leader; he was a founder of the Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples in San Francisco. As a prominent religious figure, he played a leading role in many social justice movements and organizations of the twentieth century.
Leader Dn. Paul is from Raleigh, NC, and was ordained to the transitional diaconate on 6 June 2020. Over the last eight years, he has served parishes in Lynn, MA, Grahamstown, South Africa, Raleigh NC, New Haven CT, and New York City. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from Morehouse College, a Master of Divinity from Berkeley Episcopal Divinity School at Yale University, and is currently a PhD student in Systematic Theology at Fordham University. His research rests at the intersections of Theology, Black Study, and Queer of Color Critique, with special attention on the corpus of 20th century theologian and mystic Howard Washington Thurman
